Martin Crawford’s work examines human connections through the objects we encounter, challenging traditional anthropocentric perspectives in favor of a more egalitarian view of matter. By intuitively engaging with the dormant histories of objects and materials, he creates abstract narratives that invite reflection on our shared environment and interconnected stories. His bricolage approach blends abstraction, storytelling, and memory, encouraging viewers to connect deeply with objects while contemplating their own identities.
In his latest collection, Crawford contrasts the visual languages of large, enduring memorials with small, ephemeral roadside shrines, exploring themes of memory, time, and death. Through juxtapositions of palette, texture, and symbolism, his works question the legitimacy of remembrance structures, revealing their fragility in the face of forgetting.
Crawford earned top honors and multiple awards at Duncan of Jordanstone, including the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy Art Prize. He has exhibited globally, with recent shows in Chile, Japan, and Scotland, highlighting his diverse and thought-provoking artistry.
